Make your own comfy pyjamas!
We’ll help you get to grips with using a commercial sewing pattern to make your own pair of PJ bottoms. Pyjamas are a great choice for sewists making a garment for the first time. You will learn some simple garment construction whilst making something that comes together relatively quickly, so you can start wearing them straight away. We will be making a simple pair of woven PJs with an elasticated waistband (size range approximately UK size 8-18). You can choose to make them short or long and whether to add in-seam pockets.
You will learn: –
How to accurately take your measurements. – How to read a commercial sewing pattern to choose and size and cut our your paper pattern and fabric. – How to sew simple seams and finish off the seam allowances. – How to create a casing for an elastic waist band. – How to hem. – How to add pockets (optional). What’s included: Tuition from experienced sewists. 10% discount on purchases made in store during the workshop, or bookings on future workshops. Tea/coffee and biscuits (please bring a packed lunch or visit one of the local cafes). Skill level: You will need to have a basic knowledge of sewing. If you can thread your machine and sew simple projects like cushions, you can make pyjama bottoms. Please note that depending on experience levels and progression during the day, you may have to finish the project at home – you may have some small bits to finish, like hemming.
You will need to bring: –
Your sewing machine and sewing kit (paper scissors, dressmaging scissors, tape measure, pins, spare machine needles in case of mishaps, etc.).
– A copy of New Look Pattern 6404. The size range included in the pattern is from XS (31-32.5″ hips) to XL (47-49″hips). Part of dressmaking is producing flattering garments that suit your form, so is useful to have a good idea of your vital stats in order to cut garments that fit you nicely.
– Fabric. Depending on the size you make you’ll need between 1.7m and 2.5m of 140cm – 150cm wide fabric. Check the pattern for exact measurements. The inside leg measurement for sizes XS-M is about 33 inches and L-XL is about 34, so if you plan on lengthening your PJ bottoms add an extra 20 cm onto the suggested fabric requirements for your size. Please get in touch for specific recommendations.
– 20mm wide elastic at least as long as your waist measurement.
– Co-ordinating thread.
